The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Monday affirmed that the fight he is waging is not inspired by attachment to power but by the desire to serve the country, overcome the institutional crisis, and achieve economic growth.

Mr. Castillo's remarks were made during his presentation before the Congress plenary session, where an impeachment motion against him will be debated and put to a vote.

The Head of State affirmed that he attended Parliament to show his utmost respect for the constitutional State and its control tools, in line with his speech delivered on July 28, 2021.

"I will never ignore the Rule of Law," he pointed out.

"I have come here with confidence, to tell you that the fight I am waging now is not inspired by attachment to power —which is temporary, for a period of five years, and conferred by popular mandate. My fight is to serve the country, to overcome the institutional crisis, to achieve economic growth, and put Peru's and Peruvians' interest above all else," he stated.

Additionally, the country's top official mentioned that he attended Congress to defend himself against an impeachment motion seeking his removal from office.

On March 14, Peru's Congress agreed to debate the impeachment motion against the President of the Republic Pedro Castillo, which was presented by a group of parliamentarians on March 8.

The initiative was approved by 76 votes in favor, 41 against, and one abstention.
