Peru's Congress on Monday agreed to debate an impeachment motion against the President of the Republic Pedro Castillo, which was presented by a group of parliamentarians on March 8.

The initiative was approved by 76 votes in favor, 41 against, and one abstention.

Immediately after the vote, Congress Chairwoman Maria del Carmen Alva suspended the session and convened a meeting of the Board of Spokespersons.

Afterwards, the plenary session was resumed and lawmakers agreed to hold a session on March 28 at 3:00 p.m. to debate and vote on the impeachment motion, as proposed by the Chair of Congress.

This proposal was approved by 86 votes in favor, 21 against, and 10 abstentions.

Therefore, the Head of State will be able to attend the Parliament's plenary session alone or in the company of his lawyer in order to present his disclaimers.

He may also decide not to attend Congress and send his lawyer to represent him, as this is allowed by the Constitution.

Before adjourning the session, Alva convened a session for Tuesday, March 15, at 5:00 p.m., in order to receive the Head of State, who will deliver a message.
