Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti on Wednesday congratulated the new President of the United States Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris, after both of them were sworn into office earlier today.

"On behalf of Peru and its people, we renew our interest in working together to strengthen democracy and the fight against COVID-19 in the region," Mr. Sagasti wrote on Twitter.

The Head of State also stressed that "Peru is optimistic about a future of greater cooperation, investment, and trade with the United States."

As is known, Mr. Biden defeated former U.S. President Donald J. Trump in the 2020 elections held last November.

For his part, Mr. Sagasti became President of the Republic of Peru on November 17, 2020, to lead a transitional government. His term in office is set to end on July 28, 2021.
