Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Saturday congratulated Joe Biden on his victory in the United States presidential elections.

The Head of State welcomed the massive participation of Americans in the polls and extended his congratulations to Kamala Harris, who was on the ticket with Biden as Vice-President.

"We will work to strengthen democracy, multilateralism, international cooperation, and to preserve the environment," the Peruvian leader posted on Twitter.

Democratic candidate Joe Biden has won the presidency of the United States after taking Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes.

With those votes from the State of Pennsylvania, Biden reached a total of 273, which makes him the 46th President of the United States, CNN reported.

Last August, the Democratic Party nominated the 77-year-old Biden as the party's presidential candidate for the November 3 election.
