The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Monday asked lawmakers attending a Congress plenary session to vote for democracy and against instability, referring to the impeachment motion that is being debated and will be put to a vote at Parliament.

The Head of State affirmed that, despite the crisis the country is facing, "we must have faith and confidence in the future of the homeland."

In addition, he asked legislators to work together so as to combat the true enemies of the country, noting that corruption, poverty, discrimination, inequality, public insecurity, and violence against women, are just some of them.

"Let us work with greatness, commitment, and patriotism," the President stated.

In addition, he mentioned that his election takes place in one of the most dramatic moments in Peruvian history, including high inflation, a country in mourning for the deaths attributed to the pandemic, as well as a destroyed economy.

"Unfortunately, this has been combined with the conflict between Russia and Ukraine," he added.

"Contrary to what my detractors said, I have defended myself. I submit myself to your judgment," Mr. Castillo remarked.

The Head of State also noted that none of the acts attributed to him qualifies as permanent moral incapacity.

Likewise, President Castillo said that his lawyer will demonstrate, point by point, that the impeachment motion is not based on facts and law, and lacks all evidence.
