Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti on Monday announced a preventive suspension of incoming air travel from Europe for 15 days due to the emergence of a new variant of coronavirus.

In a recent Address to the Nation, Sagasti also announced that Peru has banned entry for non-resident foreign nationals who have been to the United Kingdom over the past two weeks.

Likewise, the Government stipulated that Peruvian nationals or foreign residents who are in Peru and have visited the United Kingdom over the past two weeks should self-quarantine for 14 days.

The Head of State affirmed that the Government has decided to declare a state of "maximum alert" in the epidemiological surveillance system.

According to the Peruvian leader, this new variant of coronavirus, which has caused concern and alarm in Europe and other regions, also affects the country.

He went on to say that the World Health Organization (WHO) has called on its Member States to redouble control and prevention procedures.

"Given the situation and for everyone's peace of mind, I want to inform you that no direct flight from the United Kingdom has arrived in the territory since borders were reopened, and passengers arriving on connecting flights are being monitored by the Ministry of Health," he assured.

He also recalled that no passenger can enter the country without a negative molecular-test result, in compliance with the protocols.
