Peru's PM: Vaccination process moves forward firmly

Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Wednesday affirmed that vaccination against COVID-19 is progressing firmly in Peru, adding that more than 1.2 million people have already received the first dose in the national territory.

Within this framework, the high-ranking official stated that the current administration secures the necessary vaccines for all citizens nationwide.

"The vaccination process in Peru is making steady progress; as announced by President Francisco Sagasti, we have signed a new contract with the Pfizer laboratory for the acquisition of 12 million additional vaccine doses. Thus, we rely on a total of 60 million secured vaccines for the present year," she indicated.

According to the Prime Minister, over 1.2 million people have received the first dose and 650,000 have already received the second, thus exceeding 1.8 million doses to date.

Furthermore, the Cabinet chief announced that on May 6 and 7 more Pfizer vaccine batches will land in Lima, thus adding 700,000 doses per week this May.

"Additionally, doses acquired from other laboratories such as AstraZeneca and Sinopharm will be added throughout the year, until completing 60 million contracted doses, which are more than enough to vaccinate all people over 18 years of age who reside in our country," she stressed.

Remarks were made during a press conference held at the Government Palace in Lima.
