Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Sunday affirmed that the vaccinathon is a strategy against COVID-19 that is yielding very positive results.

She emphasized that, until today at 3 a.m., 110,000 people had reached the vaccination centers to be inoculated. So, she expects that the goal of administering 200,000 doses will be exceeded by 7 p.m. today.

According to the Cabinet chief, the vaccinathon is an uninterrupted 36-hour event that aims to immunize the population at different sites across Metropolitan Lima and Callao.

"Last week, by the end of Sunday, it was reported that 220,000 doses were administered (as part of the first vaccinathon), but in the course of the following few days —when information was complete— it was found that 262,000 doses had been applied. We expect a similar figure for this week," she said.

In this regard, the high-ranking official called on the people who are scheduled to be vaccinated this weekend to get their first or second dose, noting that actual protection can only be achieved with the two doses of the vaccine.

She pointed out that Junin, Ica, and Cusco joined the vaccinathon drive last week, and that other regions can gradually do so, based on their progress in the vaccination of the urban population.

"I am convinced that medium and large cities will use this methodology, which proves that people wish to get vaccinated but the vaccination schedule did not suit them because of their work activities," she added.

Remarks were made on Sunday morning in an interview with RPP radio and TV station on the progress made by the Transition and Emergency Government.
