Peruvian Prime Minister Alberto Otarola has announced that the Executive Branch will make very important decisions on migration matters in the next few days.

"We are reviewing reports from the sectors. We understand that the primary duty of the Government and the State is to protect the safety and life of Peruvian citizens, as well as the safety and life of those who have legally entered the country and are entitled public services," he said in statements to the press.

The Cabinet chief announced that an intersectoral regulation is being prepared to curb criminal acts and address citizen security issues in the country in the most assertive way possible.

The head of the Ministerial Cabinet reported that almost 900,000 foreigners entered the country in 2017

In this regard, Otarola underlined that if an openness and migration policy of this nature is adopted, the State should be prepared to provide essential public services, noting that this has not happened.

Likewise, he affirmed that most of the immigrants who have entered the country contribute to it by engaging in licit activities, but others have come to commit crimes and atrocities.

In this regard, the Prime Minister referred to Santiago de Surco Municipality's security guard, Luis Manrique Pizarro, who was shot by a Venezuelan national, as well as the murder of Santa Anita's Deputy Mayor John Valverde Ramirez, which happened last night.

On behalf of the Government of the President of the Republic Dina Boluarte, he expressed his solidarity with the bereaved families.

Otarola stressed the need to know how many foreign citizens reside in Peru and who they are, noting that between 300,000 and 400,000 people have entered the national territory illegally.

"We will legislate and regulate this issue (of immigration) clearly," he said.
