Peru's PM: Govt's priority is to channel youth participation

13:52 | Lima, Nov. 19.

Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Thursday affirmed that one of the Government's priorities will be to channel the participation of young people and promote dialogue with them.

"One of the priorities set out by the President (Francisco Sagasti) is to identify the best institutional mechanism to channel the participation of young people, who have raised awareness among Peruvians regarding the importance of having effectively functioning institutions," she told RPP radio and TV station.

According to the Cabinet chief, young people are tired of some political practices that they feel are not conducive to a good democratic turnout or respect for human rights.

Therefore, she noted that one of the first tasks to be addressed in the first Council of Ministers session —to be held on Friday— is to identify the best institutional channel to promote dialogue with the youth and draw up an agenda for the coming years.

"The problems are of a structural nature, and we need to solve them gradually with investment and political commitment," Bermudez stated.

Another important aspect, she said, will be to promote transparency and public integrity in the Executive Branch, ensuring that relevant laws are known and enforced first.

"First and foremost, the existing laws must be kept in force. We are going to identify the shortcomings that prevent rules on integrity from being enforced. As a first step, all ministers are preparing the necessary documentation to determine whether a conflict of interest exists, not only involving us but our relatives," she emphasized.

The Prime Minister remarked that the ministerial team will give its best and, in the coming eight months, will focus on the points raised by President Francisco Sagasti.
