Prime Minister Alberto Otarola on Monday affirmed that —at the request of the
President of the Republic Dina Boluarte— the Government will embark on a reform process within the Peruvian National Police (PNP).
The high-ranking official indicated that the Government has not only terminated the appointment of Alfaro, but announced a number of changes in posts within the PNP, which shows a new focus on security and fight against corruption.
Likewise, he pointed out that the disclosures of an alleged espionage ring promoted during the government of Pedro Castillo provide another example of how the issue of citizen security was approached then.
Otarola remarked that the
Ministry of Interior (Mininter) was dismantled and had no liaison offices or decision-making procedures for the benefit of citizens, noting that the current Government has changed this little by little.
"In effect, the Minister of the Interior (Vicente Romero) has been entrusted —and the President has placed emphasis on it— to embark on a reform process within the National Police so that this reform leads to the recruitment of technical cadres, the promotion of those who have worked well in citizen security and, of course, a frontal fight against corruption," he said.
"Consequently, we are cleaning up the institution. I think this clean-up has to be done immediately, and this should mean that we have a chain of responsibilities. Secondly, we believe that the role of the police should be reassessed in the society," the Prime Minister added.
Meeting with former Cabinet chiefs
The Cabinet chief remarked that he has taken note of the contributions made by his predecessors, noting that they will be very useful for future decision-making.
