Peru's Juan Diego Florez returns to New York's Met

15:07 | New York (U.S.), Dec. 14.

Renowned Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez returns to the Metropolitan Opera for the first time since 2015 in order to sing one of the lead roles —along with German soprano Diana Damrau— in Giuseppe Verdi's masterpiece "La Traviata."

This performance represents a homecoming for Florez. The world-famous tenor was last seen on the Met stage in 2015 when he appeared in "La Donna del Lago."

The Peruvian's debut at this opera house was in 2002 when he sang Almaviva in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville."

Reportedly, the new production of "La Traviata" opens a new era at the Metropolitan Opera.

Canadian Yannick Nezet-Seguin conducts Michael Mayer's new production.

According to the Met, La Traviata features a dazzling 19th-century setting that changes with the seasons.

Damrau plays the tragic heroine, Violetta, and Florez sings the role of Alfredo, Violetta's hapless lover. Baritone Quinn Kelsey is Alfredo's father, Germont, who destroys their love.

Later performances feature Anita Hartig, Stephen Costello, Artur Rucinski, and Placido Domingo.

La Traviata will be broadcast live on Saturday, December 15, at Multicines UVK cinemas in Lima's San Isidro and Surco districts.

One week to the premiere, Florez shared a post via Facebook to thank the team: "So thankful the wonderful team working to make the wonder happen!"
