The Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) has reported that Peru's imprisoned ex-President Alberto Fujimori was admitted to the emergency department of Hospital II Vitarte in Lima's Ate district on Tuesday morning.

The former President was taken to the hospital by an ambulance from the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) at 11:26 a.m. (local time).

According to the INPE, Fujimori presented dermal manifestations, which revealed a picture of allergic urticaria.

"The patient is treated by physicians on duty and, taking into account the chronic heart problem he has, he will be transferred to the Intensive Care Unit to continue being monitored by specialists due to possible effects associated with the aforementioned clinical profile," EsSalud said in a statement.

Finally, the Social Health Insurance System reiterated its firm commitment to providing timely and quality medical care to its policyholders.

Alberto Fujimori is being held at Barbadillo Prison, which is also located in Lima's Ate district.

As is known, the ex-President of the Republic (1990-2000) has been serving a prison term for crimes against human rights and corruption committed during his term in office.
