Peru's Health Min: We are preparing for new COVID-19 wave in late Oct or early Nov

10:00 | Lima, Oct. 4.

Peruvian Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti affirmed that the entire health system in the country is getting ready for a second wave or outbreak of COVID-19 that might occur in late October or early November.

"We are preparing for the most difficult scenario, and that is what we are doing. We are taking actions at the national level, within regional health directorates and throughout the Ministry of Health (Minsa) in the face of a second wave," she said after a ceremony in which Peru received 250 mechanical ventilators donated by the Government of the United States.

The head of Minsa explained that, in medicine, giving an exact date or figure is impossible, because everything is constantly changing, and that the most critical scenario for the country is projected for the end of this month, which coincides with the reopening of a series of economic activities and the resumption of international flights.

“We believe that a second wave might occur by the end of October, or in early November, and a more relaxed scenario might occur in January or late December,” she stated.

Mazzetti stressed the importance of being prepared and not losing what has been achieved with so much effort in the past months.

"If a second wave arrives and we keep maintaining the (biosafety) measures, the number of cases will increase, but slowly, and it will be lower than in the first time," the government official remarked.

"However, if we are not careful, we might put at risk what we have achieved so far," she warned.
