Citizens of 38 years of age and above will be immunized against COVID-19 in the Vaccinathon taking place in Lima Metropolitan Area and Callao region on August 6, 7, and 8, Peruvian Health Minister Hernando Cevallos confirmed on Tuesday.

The Cabinet member affirmed that the vaccination against coronavirus remains in force, adding that there will be an extended session of immunizations on those days, which —like previous dates— have proven to work as they significantly raise the number of vaccinated people.

"We are designing various strategies (...) For the Vaccinathon on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we are going to lower the age to 38, (...) and we will continue to lower the age groups," he said in remarks to Red de Comunicacion Regional (RCR).

However, the Cabinet member noted that —throughout this week— people over 60 years will continue to be deemed as priority since there is a very important percentage of people from that age who had not been vaccinated, which makes them vulnerable to the virus.

"People should know that 80% of people who die from COVID-19 at home or in hospital ICUs are over 60 years old; it is a high risk group, so we must make every effort to get them vaccinated with the two doses. If we do not vaccinate them, we will not be able to avoid the complications of a third wave," he indicated.

Furthermore, the minister explained that —as a recent regular stock of vaccines has arrived from abroad—vaccination will strongly resume this weekend with campaigns nationwide, in addition to regular vaccination sessions.

"This will go hand-in-hand with some measures that have already been taken along with regional governments to analyze what is their requirement in terms of primary care, human resources, oxygen concentrators, and other issues. We are also preparing a list of requirements in relation to molecular tests," he expressed.

Cevallos announced that Vaccinathons will also be held in Ica, Junin, Cajamarca, Arequipa, and Piura, among other cities.

Moreover, the minister announced that health establishments which —had been closed— will be opened, noting that every effort is being made so that vaccine doses reach out to the most remote parts of the country.

Lastly, he referred to the need to develop communication strategies to achieve the vaccination of older adults lagging behind and said that brigades are being formed to arrive in the most remote areas.
