Peru's Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti affirmed that New Year's Eve celebrations constitute her sector's upcoming challenge since young people are less aware of the risks of COVID-19.

In turn, the minister expressed concern about the recent protests that blocked the roads, which, she said, were different from those carried out weeks ago by young people in the cities.

"We had seen demonstrations before, and we noticed that nothing changed," Mazzetti said regarding COVID-19 contagion figures.

"But now, she affirmed, we are worried because the mobilization (on roads) has lasted a long time and involved a lot of physical contact; we are assessing the figures for the north of the country," she added.

The health sector's head indicated that Christmas celebrations have been different, noting that many people took precautions and gave health to their loved ones, but now —she highlighted— the New Year holidays are the upcoming challenge.

"I am concerned about New Year's Eve, because young people are less aware of risks," she stated, calling on the population to keep informed so that they can make good decisions.

"Sometimes we need to sacrifice, avoid immediate celebrations to get something better later, perhaps, avoid camping or attending massive New Year's Eve parties so as to prevent the number of (COVID-19) positive cases from increasing," the high-ranking official pointed out.
