The COVAX Facility is committed to sending the initial batch of COVID-19 vaccines to Peru in the first quarter of 2021 mainly to immunize healthcare personnel, Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti announced on Tuesday.

"The COVAX Facility sent us information a couple of days ago, indicating that its first shipments would be (ready) in the first quarter of 2021; these are most likely shipments destined for the population that will administer the vaccines, thus meaning healthcare personnel," she said in remarks to Canal N.

The high-ranking official clarified that the number of vaccines to be sent to Peru is still unknown, adding that it will depend on the number of antidotes that the COVAX Facility is obtaining.

Likewise, Dr. Mazzetti affirmed that the agreement signed with the aforementioned mechanism implies receiving vaccines for 20% of the population.

Lastly, she stressed that clinical trials being conducted in Peru by Sinopharm, Johnson & Johnson, and AstraZeneca provide the nation with a preferential position when it comes to acquiring vaccines once they are approved.
