Health Minister Oscar Ugarte on Sunday informed that 270,000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses against COVID-19 would arrive in Peru this Sunday.

"With the additional AstraZeneca vaccines that arrive today (…) we will be able to progressively expand it (the vaccination process) across all regions in the country," Ugarte told RPP radio and TV station.

The Cabinet member explained that these doses correspond to the agreement signed between the Peruvian Government and the COVAX Facility, adding that these will serve to immunize people who live in remote areas such as indigenous population, as these vaccines do not require a complex freezing system.

In regard to the concerns that have arisen about this vaccine, Ugarte pointed out that the European Union has authorized the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The minister also said that the World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the number of thrombosis cases in people, who have been vaccinated with this dose, is lower than the cases registered in people who have not been immunized.

"The WHO does not recommend ceasing the AstraZeneca treatment," he stressed.
