The President of the Republic, Jose Jeri Ore, announced that this week the Government will request legislative powers from the Congress of the Republic to amend the necessary laws to incentivize private investment and economic development, as well as facilitate the fight against organized crime, extortion, and corruption.
"This week we will present the legislative powers to the Congress of the Republic, where the main topic will undoubtedly be citizen security. However, there are other important issues that we also need to address that are related to economic growth," explained.
The president Jeri stated so during his working meeting with the country's main business associations, held at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).
The meeting aimed to boost the investment climate, competitiveness, and economic growth of the country through coordinated work between the public and private sectors, laying the foundations for Peru's development.
"This meeting demonstrates the commitment of our Government of Transition and National Reconciliation to the country and to those who drive development. I have a very clear message: Peru today has a government determined to combat insecurity, guarantee free elections, and promote economic growth," the head of the Peruvian state stated.
President Jeri specified that the technical teams from the ministries will continue holding meetings with business associations and parliamentary spokespeople to reach a consensus on the best measures regarding citizen security, investment, and economic development.
"We are going to broaden the debate to find the balance, the point of understanding we need to reach. While it is true that we must combat crime, this does not mean that, despite having a short time in office, we will not lay the foundations for the future”, said President Jeri.
“We have to do it; it is this government's responsibility. We will leave the playing field clear and organized so that our country can take off, consolidate, and become the country it was always meant to be: great," he emphasized.
Sectoral Messages
In turn, the President of the Council of Ministers, Ernesto Alvarez Miranda, pledged to maintain ongoing communication with business associations and invited them to continue investing in the country to provide opportunities for all Peruvians.
In turn, the Minister of Economy and Finance (MEF), Denisse Miralles Miralles, asserted that sustainable growth must be built through unity.
"Let's continue to unite for a Peru that produces, that has confidence, and that generates opportunities for all," she stated.
For his part, the Minister of Defense, Cesar Diaz Peche, affirmed that the government is working toward national pacification with concrete actions against illegal mining and the deployment of the Armed Forces during the state of emergency, in support of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and local governments.
Meanwhile, the Minister of the Interior (Mininter), Vicente Tiburcio Orbezo, indicated that the Executive Branch must guarantee that Peru is a safe country to invest in, produce in, and work in.
"Citizen security and the fight against crime require the contribution of all Government’s entities. That is why, from the Ministry of the Interior, we are promoting a strategic public-private alliance for security, which will allow us to share information and prevent risks. Every legitimate investment has the backing of the Peruvian State. Our vision for the future involves ensuring security with competitiveness. Only a safe country can be a prosperous country," he stated.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Walter Martinez Laura, indicated that part of the package of legal reforms being prepared includes modifications to laws that curb the rise of crime.
“We need reforms. That’s why we are pushing for urgent legislative changes: extending the term of the statute of limitations because complex cases cannot be resolved in a year; strengthening the definition of organized crime, including corruption offenses; improving the requirements for pretrial detention and asset forfeiture; and modifying internal regulations for both prison staff and inmates, among other things,” he emphasized.
During the event, representatives of business associations also shared their perspectives on the country’s economic growth, their demands regarding citizen security, and their intention to work collaboratively with the government.
Participants included the Confederation of Real Estate Developers of Peru (CODIP); Peruvian Chamber of Construction (Capeco); National Society of Construction and Infrastructure (SNCI); Peruvian Society of Hydrocarbons (SPH); Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL).
