Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi has begun her working visit to Jakarta, Indonesia, where she will meet with representatives of the countries attending the 43rd Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Moreover, the Peruvian government official is expected to meet with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn.

Minister Gervasi's visit will serve to strengthen Peru's relations with the Asian bloc within the framework of the presidencies of the Pacific Alliance and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in 2024.

About ASEAN

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

Brunei Darussalam joined ASEAN on 7 January 1984, followed by Viet Nam on 28 July 1995, Lao PDR, and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999, making up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN.

The Pacific Alliance is an economic trade block that includes Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Peru, encompassing a population of approximately 233 million inhabitants.

Meanwhile, the APEC forum brings together several of the most important economies in the Asia-Pacific region, which accounts for 61% of the world's total GDP and 47% of the world's trade.
