Peru's First Lady participates in launch of strategy to speed up adoption of minors

14:47 | Lima, Sep. 27.

Peru's First Lady Lilia Paredes on Monday urged authorities to speed up adoption procedures for minors at State-run shelters.

Her remarks were made during her participation in the launch of the strategy "Caso por caso, hasta llegar a casa" (Case by case until home is reached) run by the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations.

"We are like a mother for those children. I advise you to speed up the adoption procedures because families are looking forward to them, and those who are mothers can understand such distress (…)," she stated.

Lilia Paredes took part in the activity to accompany Women and Vulnerable Populations Minister Anahi Durand, who launched the above-mentioned strategy within the framework of the Week of Children's Rights.

Durand thanked the First Lady for her presence and for her commitment to actions promoted by the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations in favor of children.

The government official commented that there are more than 5,000 children at State-run shelters and the adoption process takes between four and five years, which is why her sector has coordinated with the Judiciary and the Ministry of Justice in order to speed it up.

To begin with, the minister hopes that the waiting period for adoption will be reduced by 40%.

In addition, she announced that her sector will foster closer coordination with regions whose adoption cases are at a standstill, such as Puno.
