Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer on Tuesday described as very positive the trip made by President Dina Boluarte along with a delegation from the Executive Branch for the enthronement of Pope Leo XIV, held at the Vatican last Sunday.

"I am very cautious about using superlatives, but I believe in this case it is worth it; the outcome has been very positive," he told RPP.

The Peruvian government official indicated that the conversation with the Head of State lasted between 25 and 30 minutes and was held in private.

In that regard, Schialer said that he was confident the President thanked him for his work in Peru and invited him to visit the South American country.

"I know that he (Pope Leo XIV) earnestly wants to come to Peru and also to continue, from this new position —such an important and highly visible role— the apostolate he has carried out in Peru for 40 years," Schialer added.

When asked about the appointment of Peru's next ambassador to the Vatican, which is still pending, he deemed as "political fiction" the versions suggesting that former Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen would take that post.

He emphasized that this matter falls within the president's authority and also requires the Vatican's acceptance, as the receiving state, of whoever is proposed.

In that regard, he expressed confidence that the position will be filled by a "figure with national acceptance" and did not rule out the possibility of it being a career diplomat.

Relations with China and the U.S.

At another moment, Minister Schialer mentioned that the visa exemption for Peruvians traveling to China, effective from June 1, had already been broadly proposed during President Xi Jinping's visit to Peru for APEC 2024.

The diplomat noted that it is a tourist visa but that it can serve as an opportunity for Peruvian businesspeople to visit the Asian country and see the opportunities it offers.

Likewise, the minister highlighted that, during conversations with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, it was emphatically stated that "the United States has been and will be an ally and a friend of Peru."

"Of course, I conveyed that in diplomatic terms to Minister Wang Yi, who understood perfectly. (…) He was very patient in making me understand that he agrees with this diplomacy of active neutrality," Schialer pointed out.

"That is to say, we will do everything necessary in favor of mutual benefit, but also Peruvians will take care of Peruvian matters without harming anyone. We won’t harm China, we won’t harm the United States, nor affect our relations —which are the most important," he added.
