Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer on Tuesday stated that the Judiciary can request the extradition of former First Lady Nadine Heredia from Brazilian authorities.

The Cabinet member said that the asylum granted to Heredia Alarcon, following the 15-year prison sentence for the crime of money laundering, is a situation that has not been easy for either country and that actions have been taken respecting international obligations.

"The Judiciary, within its powers and authority, will be able to interact with the judicial and political authorities of Brazil requesting extradition," he asserted.

In statements to the press at Congress, the government official specified that in his case the prestige of Peru is a higher value that must be preserved, in compliance with international commitments.

Likewise, Minister Schialer stated that the Brazilian ambassador to Peru and his counterpart from that country informed him that, after receiving Heredia Alarcon's asylum request, they had decided to grant it based on the Caracas Convention.

"It was up to Peru to proceed with granting safe passage or guarantees, including the corresponding safe-conducts, to (allow her to) leave the country," he indicated.

The Cabinet member said he is closely following the positions expressed in Brazil on this matter, but that it is not the Foreign Affairs minister's role to comment on internal affairs of other countries.

Pope Francis

Regarding the high-level commission to attend Pope Francis' funeral, he stated that it is being formed and that it will be the President of the Republic who determines its composition.

Adhesion to the OECD

Minister Schialer appeared today before the special commission to report on the progress of Peru's accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

"It has been a long and important meeting; the progress made was presented. We are very advanced— several recommendations have been addressed, and others are still in progress. I believe that by the end of this year we will not be at 100%, but we will be very advanced," he assured reporters.

The government official reiterated before the special commission that accession to the OECD is a national aspiration and objective for Peru.
