Defense Minister Jorge Chavez on Monday affirmed that the Government will strengthen the capacities of the Armed Forces through reforms that will be driven by his sector.

"[We will carry out a] reform to ensure compliance with public policies and public management in order to strengthen the institutionality of the Armed Forces and be able to carry out the fulfillment of its mission by strengthening its capabilities," Chavez said in statements to the media.

"The Armed Forces have been, are, and will be at the service of the Nation," he also stated in an interview with Canal N.

Kepashiato

On the other hand, the minister remarked that the gas plant situated in the town of Kepashiato (Cusco) was peacefully recovered.

"More than 100 people were peacefully evicted from the place, since they had been affecting —to a large extent— the services intended for the population," he said.

The government official explained that no firearms were used and no shots were fired during the operation due to the features of the premises, since any shot attempt could have sparked a catastrophe.

"A gunshot event was not an option, since it could have posed a threat to human life," he stressed.

Protests in regions

On the other hand, Chavez underscored that the State of Emergency declared by the Government made it possible to restore and protect the lives of the population in the face of the incidents of vandalism during the recent protest demonstrations.
