Peru's Culture Min: Gap-closing plan to be resumed in Loreto region

10:54 | Iquitos (Loreto region), Aug. 10.

Culture Minister Alejandro Neyra on Monday announced that the gap-closing plan, an initiative aimed at bringing the State-run public services closer to the needs of the population, will be resumed in Loreto, a region in the northern Peruvian Amazon.

According to the government official, this was one of the agreements reached during the meeting with regional authorities, including Governor Elisban Ochoa.

The gathering addressed the critical need to strengthen the health care system to respond to COVID-19 in Loreto, particularly in the locality of Bretaña, where a clash has recently occurred, leaving 3 locals dead as well as 11 civilians and 6 police officers injured.

"It is important to further improve the conditions of the indigenous communities. It is a permanent concern for the State," the minister emphasized.

Moreover, he said they talked about a broader agenda and platform, which has to do with closing gaps in Loreto region.

"We have agreed to resume the gap-closing plan, which is an initiative promoted by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers," he underscored.

The idea, he explained, is to address issues related to health, water and sanitation, roads and sidewalks, as well as basic infrastructure in the communities.

The high-ranking official disclosed that a meeting will be convened next week to discuss such issues.

Neyra stated that —in the next few hours— he will visit those injured in the Bretaña clash and will meet with indigenous organizations.
