Peru's CADE 2019: "Entrepreneurs who financed electoral campaigns must step aside"

National Confederation of Private Business Institutions (Confiep) Chairwoman Maria Isabel Leon on Thursday urged entrepreneurs who financed electoral campaigns to step aside for the good of the country and their employees.

Speaking from the Annual Conference of Executives (CADE-Executives 2019), Leon affirmed that she wants to lead a series of changes for the good of companies, which —she said— "need no gesture, action, additional documentation, or agreement, but a different behavior. Let's turn this crisis into an opportunity."

"Just as I have heard of this reputational crisis (...) involving companies that financed political campaigns in inappropriate ways, I tell them —in all sincerity— that (...) I have 3,650,000 reasons to ask entrepreneurs —the ones who have done things irregularly— to step aside, for their country, their employees, and ethical reasons. Let's set the example, let's do things right," she stated.

Leon noted that entrepreneurs must behave differently in order to turn this reputational crisis "into an opportunity and reflection."

"I'm being honest when I say: Corruption never again. No matter who falls. Justice for all without excesses. We support the work of the Public Ministry and the Judiciary, but we urge people to avoid excesses, and I'm here to work for entrepreneurs in spite of the risk it may pose," she said.

In this sense, the Confiep representative called on employers to do things right and be ethical when dealing with workers, "no matter if they see us or not."

"I'm committed to remaining as representative of this group, (but) I'm not willing to swallow a bitter pill anymore (...)," she added.
