Peru's avocado exports reach over US$3 billion in Jan 2020

18:14 | Lima, Mar. 2.

Most Hass avocado exports are made between March and June, although in January 2020 sales to other countries reached US$3.623 million, up 70.3% compared to the same month in 2019, Association of Peruvian Exporters (Adex) reported on Monday.

With this, Peru is on track to become the second exporter of said product in the world this year.

In this context, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), through Agro Rural and Sierra y Selva Exportadora (Exporting Andes and Jungle), is organizing ExpoPalta 2020 —a business roundtable slated to take place this month.

Said event will bring together 35 avocado (Hass and Fuerte) producers from Junin, Ayacucho, Apurimac, Lima, Huancavelica, and La Libertad regions, with the aim of promoting the strengthening of capacities as well as the opening up of new national and export markets. Besides, ExpoPalta is intended to contribute to new business opportunities.

It must be noted that, in 2018, Peru was the third largest avocado exporter, after Mexico and the Netherlands —a trade hub for avocado and a variety of products.

Figures

This product, known as the green gold, reached 21st place in the agro-industrial supply ranking, accounting for only 0.6% of the total (January ranking). However, it ranked in the top five over the last years (Jan-Dec figures).

In 2019, for example, avocado took third place, making up 11.9% of total value-added agro-exports after grapes (US$877,116,000) and blueberries.

Last January, Peruvian avocados were exported to 10 destinations. The principal ones were the Netherlands (US$1,728,000) and Russia (US$1,089,000), which together accounted for 78% of total sales, and grew 103.9% and 154.2%, respectively.

Other destinations included Spain (US$612 million), China and Aruba. Italy, U.S., Germany, Canada, and South Korea completed the top 10.
