Peru's 2026 General Elections: Learn about deadlines set in electoral schedule

09:10 | Lima, Apr. 8.

The plenary of the National Elections Board (JNE) approved the electoral schedule that will govern the 2026 General Elections.

This timeline sets the deadlines and timeframes for public awareness, which must be followed by political parties and entities within the electoral system.

The referred electoral process will allow Peruvians to go to the polls to elect the next President of the Republic, Vice-Presidents, senators, deputies, and representatives to the Andean Parliament.

The schedule, approved through Resolution No. 0126-2025-JNE and signed by all members of the plenary, was created based on the current electoral regulations, including the latest amendments made by Congress.

For the first time, the primary elections are included, in which registered political organizations will select their candidates who will participate in the elections on April 12, 2026.

According to the timeline, these will take place on two dates based on the election modality previously determined: Sunday, November 30 (vote by affiliates or non-affiliates who have registered with a political organization to participate in this electoral process) and December 7 (vote by delegates).

Additionally, it was established that August 2, 2025, is the deadline for requesting the formation of electoral alliances, and that September 1 is the latest date for these alliances to complete their registration in the Political Organizations Registry (ROP).

It also states that October 14 is the closure of the electoral roll, managed by the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec).

December 23 is the deadline for submitting requests for the registration of candidate slates and lists.

On the same day, the JNE's Political Organizations Registry (ROP) will close, in accordance with Article 4 of the Political Organizations Law.

An important milestone in 2026 is March 13, the last day to resolve appeals regarding the exclusion and challenges of candidates.

The following day, March 14, is the deadline for the candidacies to be officially registered.

The General Elections will take place on Sunday, April 12, 2026. A potential second round (runoff) for the presidential election will be on June 7 of the same year.

In doing so, the JNE ensures the approval of the electoral schedule to ensure transparency and the proper development of such important elections.

The document is signed by JNE Chairman Roberto Burneo Bermejo and the members of the Full Body: Martha Maisch Molina, Willy Ramirez Chavarry, Ruben Torres Cortez, and Aaron Oyarce Yuzzelli.
