Peru's 2026 Elections: ONPE and JNE to work together to improve runoff process

16:00 | Lima, May. 14.

The Acting Chief of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), Bernardo Pachas, said Thursday that an agreement had been reached with the National Elections Board (JNE) to work jointly in order to provide citizens with efficient electoral public services during the June 7 presidential runoff.

The official said he held a meeting today with the JNE chairman and plenary members, as well as Foreign Affairs Ministry representatives, to coordinate the actions that must be carried out following the proclamation of the first-round presidential election results, scheduled for May 17.

"We have also agreed to hold these types of meetings more frequently, with the aim of improving every step experienced during the recent April 12 election and working as a team so citizens can receive quality electoral public services on June 7," he stated.

Pachas explained that, for the runoff election, ONPE needs to move forward with the color proofing stage and start printing electoral materials, including ballots, voter lists, as well as electoral records, and their distribution.

He stated that electoral materials will first be sent abroad so Peruvians residing abroad can participate in the runoff election to choose the next President of the Republic.

The presidential runoff is scheduled for June 7. It will feature the candidates who finished in first and second place in the April 12 election.

Pachas made the announcement alongside JNE Chairman Roberto Burneo and plenary members.

At this event, officials confirmed that the official first-round presidential election results will be proclaimed on Sunday, May 17.
