Foreign Affairs Minister Hugo de Zela reaffirmed that his sector is fully committed to the 2026 General Elections and to the vote of Peruvians abroad, which—he said—will be safeguarded until it is returned to Peru and delivered to the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE).

During the delivery of electoral materials to be used for external voting, he reiterated his call on compatriots abroad to go to the polls on April 12 and, with their vote, help decide the country's future.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through our consulates, will provide all the support and guarantees so that they can exercise their right to vote," De Zela stated.

"Besides, I want to assure them that that vote, once it is cast, will be monitored and safeguarded until it returns to Peru and is delivered to the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE)," he told reporters at the event on Sunday.

It should be noted that this year will mark the first time that ballots cast outside the country will be returned to Peru, within the framework of electoral regulations that mandate the preservation of ballots.

De Zela also thanked ONPE Chief Piero Corvetto for his efficiency in all the tasks carried out by the institution in the framework of these General Elections.

The Cabinet member noted that this Ministry is the only body within the Executive Branch with a specific role in this process, namely organizing elections abroad.

The diplomat indicated that the election day will take place in many cities abroad, which requires highly professional work, as conditions in each of these locations differ.

"It is not the same to organize, for example, an electoral process in a city in the Americas, or in a city in Asia, or in a European city. These are different processes, since local coordination must be carried out in each location," De Zela said.

"But you can be assured that the Foreign Affairs Ministry is fully and absolutely committed to ensuring that this process is carried out impeccably under the direction of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), an institution in which Peruvians place the responsibility of carrying out this very important act," he added.

This electoral process will allow Peruvians to go to the polls to elect the next President of the Republic, Vice Presidents, Senators, Deputies, and Representatives to the Andean Parliament.

The General Elections will be held on April 12, 2026, with a potential runoff for the presidential race scheduled for June 7 of the same year.
