The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) Deputy Chief Observer Alexander Gray called on political parties, citizens, and all those involved in the electoral process to act in an atmosphere of peace ahead of the presidential runoff on June 7.

"It is very important for citizens to participate in this electoral process. We are now heading toward the presidential runoff, and we call on everyone involved in the process to act in an atmosphere of peace," he told reporters.

The EU official recalled that following the first round, the mission issued a preliminary statement calling on all stakeholders involved in the elections to treat each other with respect and refrain from making remarks that could encourage acts of violence or threats.

Gray mentioned that the EU EOM is in contact with the parties and candidates participating in the presidential runoff, Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sanchez, in order to hold meetings with them and get to know their opinions.

"We are going to meet not only with the candidates, but also with the parties, campaign chiefs, and party representatives. We are very open to meeting with them and receiving their comments on the electoral process," he said, while highlighting their willingness to meet with the delegation.

At another point, the EU official reiterated that errors and irregularities were detected in Lima during the first round due to the late delivery of materials.

However, the deputy chief observer noted that during the mission's time in the country, "we have not observed systematic or widespread actions that could lead to fraud."

Lastly, Gray highlighted that the EU has an observation methodology that it has been using worldwide for the past 30 years.

"We have sent more than 200 Election Observation Missions to some 75 countries. We always use the same methodology, and we will apply it again now in the presidential runoff," he added.
