Peru welcomes 1.37 million international tourists in first five months of 2026

Peru recorded the arrival of 1,369,992 international tourists between January and May of this year, a year-on-year increase of 0.6% compared to the same period in 2025, according to the latest report by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur).

This number represented an additional influx of 7,857 international travelers during the analyzed period, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism reported.

Mincetur highlighted that this figure represents 75.1% of the level recorded between January and May 2019, the pre-pandemic year.

This result was driven mainly by the arrival of international tourists residing in Chile, which totaled 303,000 visitors and accounted for 22.1% of the total, although the figure marked a 3.1% decline compared to the same period in 2025.

They were followed by the United States with 255,000 visitors (18.6% of the total and a 5% increase), Ecuador with 114,000 (8.3% and a 3% increase), Bolivia with 75,000 (5.5% and a 6.3% decline), Colombia with 67,000 (4.9% and a 9% decline), and Brazil with 66,000 (4.9% and a 3.5% decline).

Regional blocs

The Deputy Ministry of Tourism reported that, at the regional-bloc level, the arrival of tourists residing in South America accounted for 50.2% of the total (688,000 international tourists) between January and May of 2026.

Likewise, North America accounted for 24.1% of the total (331,000 tourists), Europe for 16.6% (228,000 tourists), Asia for 5% (69,000 tourists), and Central America for 2.6% (36,000 tourists).

Regarding international tourist entries into Peru through the various Migration Control Posts, Jorge Chavez International Airport (AIJCH)—the main gateway to Lima—stood out with 871,000 international tourists, accounting for 63.6% of the total.


It was followed by the Santa Rosa Border Control Post in Tacna, which recorded the entry of 229,000 tourists (16.7%); the Tumbes Binational Border Service Center, which received 104,000 tourists (7.6%); and the Desaguadero/Carancas/CEBAF Border Control Post in Puno, which registered 68,000 tourists (5%).

During the same period, the number of resident Peruvian tourists traveling abroad reached a total of 1,458,960 people, representing a year-on-year increase of 3%.

This figure also exceeded the level recorded between January and May 2019 by 5.5%.

By regional bloc, 62.6% of resident Peruvians who traveled abroad for tourism visited countries in South America.

In terms of specific countries, Chile ranked first with 419,000 tourists, followed by the United States (172,000), Bolivia (140,000), Spain (136,000), Colombia (130,000), and Panama (91,000), among others.

Tourist attractions

The Deputy Ministry of Tourism reported that the Lima-based Magic Water Circuit remained the most visited tourist attraction between January and April of this year, receiving a total of 989,000 people.

This figure represented 75.5% of the level recorded during the same period in 2019. Of the total, 95.1% were domestic visitors and 4.9% were foreign tourists.


The Paracas National Reserve (Ica region) ranked second (430,559), surpassing both the figures recorded during the same period in 2025 (86.1%) and the levels reached in 2019 (67.2%). Of the total, 93.3% were domestic visitors and 6.7% were foreign tourists.


In turn, the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu (Cusco region) ranked third among the country's leading tourist attractions, welcoming 391,128 visitors. This figure represented 87.7% of the level recorded between January and April 2019.

It is worth noting that 79.4% of visitors were foreign tourists, while 20.6% were domestic travelers.
