Peru: Vice-President rejects break in constitutional order following Congress dissolution

13:51 | Lima, Dec. 7.

The Vice-President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Wednesday rejected the decision of President Pedro Castillo to perpetrate the breakdown of constitutional order with the closure of Congress.

Via her Twitter account, the high-ranking official stated that said decision aggravates the political crisis that is currently affecting Peru.

"This is a coup that aggravates the political and institutional crisis that Peruvian society will have to overcome with strict adherence to the law," she underlined.

Earlier today, Castillo announced today the temporary dissolution of Congress and the call for new parliamentary elections, which —according to him— should take place in nine months.

Update at 1:50 p.m. (local time): During a plenary session, Congress on Wednesday afternoon approved an impeachment against Pedro Castillo from his position as President of the Republic due to moral incapacity in the exercise of duties. Thus, he has been constitutionally removed from office.
