Peru: Vaccination against COVID-19 in regions on extreme alert to begin on Feb 10

The deployment of the Sinopharm vaccine doses in regions under extreme alert will begin on Tuesday afternoon so that the immunization process can start on Wednesday, February 10, Ministers Claudia Cornejo (Foreign Trade and Tourism) and Alejandro Neyra (Culture) reported on Monday.

According to the government officials, the vaccination process will begin in regions under extreme alert: Lima (including Metropolitan Lima and the Constitutional Province of Callao), Ancash, Pasco, Huanuco, Junin, Huancavelica, Ica, Apurimac, and Loreto. 

In addition, it was reported that the first region to receive the vaccines is Huanuco, due to the pandemic-related situation.

The distribution in Lima and Callao started on Monday and will end on Tuesday after reaching the 19 health establishments. Afterwards, the deployment in regions will begin on Tuesday afternoon.

For his part, Culture Minister Alejandro Neyra remarked that, starting Wednesday, the first region to start vaccination will be Huanuco.

"In this case, the vaccines will not only be aimed at health care workers, but at those who carry out activities, such as intensivists, and those who are directly exposed at health establishments during the fight against the pandemic," he said.

The high-ranking official confirmed that the vaccination process in Peru will begin on Tuesday.

"President (Francisco) Sagasti, as stated by Minister (Pilar) Mazzetti, will be one of the first to get vaccinated, for instance," as well as health care workers, he said.
