Peru: Ubinas Volcano's explosion likely to bring precipitations, volcanic flows

18:53 | Lima, Sep. 3.

The ash cloud following Ubinas Volcano's recent explosion is moving to the east and southeast of the district of the same name and its attached territories, Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP) reported Tuesday.

The IGP warned precipitations will occur in the area within the following days.

Additionally, the occurrence of volcanic flows is not ruled out due to such precipitations.

The ash is observed using satellite imagery and images captured by scientific cameras mounted around the volcano.

The IGP, through the National Vulcanological Center (Cenvul), continues to monitor the evolution of the eruption process, as the alert level remains at orange and a new explosion in the coming hours or days remains a possibility.

According to atmosphere dispersion models developed by Peru's National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi), the ash cloud will move to the southeast —mainly to Querapi population center— in the next few hours.

Locals have been urged to protect their eyes with glasses and wear masks to prevent respiratory tract complications.

The IGP exhorts the competent institutions to assess the ash impact on water, air, and people's health on a permanent basis.
