Peru: Total social immobilization started on Thursday, runs thru Friday

10:27 | Lima, Apr. 9.

The compulsory total social immobilization ordered by the Government for Holy Thursday and Good Friday —as part of the actions aimed at fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru— began today.

According to Supreme Decree No. 051-2020-PCM, compulsory social immobilization will rule this Thursday and Friday across the national territory.

The objective of the measure is to reduce the transit of people on the streets during these days —which are usually holidays— thus preventing the spread of COVID-19.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra announced that the decision was adopted following a recommendation from the High-Level Multisectoral Commission against Coronavirus.

The Council of Ministers approved the measure considering that these days are usually non-working holidays, and it is required to add the maximum effort in order to face the pandemic.

The purpose of these provisions is that Peru's COVID-19 infection curve does not exceed the capacity of the health system.

"Today, more than ever, we Peruvians must be united. Let's be responsible for our future as a country and stay at home so as not to take risks because our family and Peru need us. Together we can do it!" the Presidency of the Republic's Office posted on Twitter.
