The preparation of the technical file to include
Toro Muerto petroglyphs site —situated in Arequipa region—
on UNESCO's world cultural heritage list is 70% complete.
The announcement was made by Marco Lopez, representative of State-run Decentralized Culture Directorate of Arequipa (DDCC), who said the documentation is expected to be ready by the end of the year.
Lopez made the statements during the opening of Toro Muerto's first enhancement stage.
Works of this phase contribute to Toro Muerto's recognition as world cultural heritage and the increase of visitors to the area.
Information Center
The site's enhancement is part of an agreement signed between the
Ministry of Culture and the Zafranal Project —a private sector company that invested S/130,000 (around US$39,298).
Works included internal and external signage at the Information Center and repository, as well as improvement of sunshades, maintenance of restrooms, painting, repair of electrical systems, and preparation of a video library.
During the ceremony, parties to the agreement signed an addendum to carry out complementary works at the repository and Information Center.
Toro Muerto welcomes 800 visitors a month on average (during peak season) and is located four hours away from Arequipa City.
The interprovincial bus service is always available, and units depart from the city station.
