The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Monday announced that some 14 million pediatric doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 will arrive in Peru in January next year.

The Head of State explained that said doses will be of the Pfizer vaccine and are part of the latest agreement signed with such laboratory for the acquisition of 35 million doses.

“Starting January next year, as part of the latest agreement for 35 million Pfizer doses, more than 14 million pediatric doses will arrive in Peru to immunize our children aged 5 to 11 years for them to attend in-person classes,” he expressed.

Moreover, the country’s top official mentioned that the country has signed an agreement with Moderna for it to supply 20 million doses by 2022, noting there are other donations that various countries have made —through the COVAX mechanism— for the benefit of Peruvian nationals.

“Thanks to these efforts, 80% of the (target) population is expected to be fully immunized with two doses in a few days —a situation that few thought would be possible— and of course that will be an achievement that belongs to all Peruvians," he added.

Mr. Castillo underscored that the Government, through the Ministry of Health (Minsa), took the measures and protocols to prevent the spread of Omicron variant —a COVID-9 variant that is already present in the country— so as to safeguard public health.

Mr. Castillo’s remarks were contained in his speech during a ceremony marking the end of the 2021 academic year at the Peruvian Diplomatic Academy.
