Peru to maintain solidarity with Venezuelan citizens

12:35 | Lima, Oct. 23.

Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio on Tuesday affirmed Peru will continue to receive and care for Venezuelan immigrants.

Within this framework, the government official indicated the migration process will be safe, orderly, and regulated.

According to him, this was one of the main topics discussed between Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Special Envoy Angelina Jolie earlier on Tuesday.

Likewise, Popolizio stressed it is very important to maintain Peru's position on migration in order to prevent xenophobia and discrimination.

Furthermore, the diplomat said the Inca country will always do its best to provide good care for immigrants in terms of health, education, and jobs. He went on to add the Temporary Resident Permit (PTP) and refugee status applications are examples of this affirmation.

"It was a productive meeting to talk and express everything concerning the plans for the Venezuelan migration in general," he declared.

Additionally, Minister Popolizio noted the migration issue —caused by the humanitarian, political, social, and economic crisis in the neighboring country— has exceeded national capacities. Thus, it needs a regional, multilateral or global approach.

"In this sense, we want to thank Angelina Jolie's laudable work in Peru, as it seeks to raise awareness throughout the international community about a problem that requires financing, as well as greater resource support from cooperating countries and the United Nations System," he stated.

On behalf of the Peruvian Government, the minister expressed his gratitude to the UNHCR for its aid work in the Inca nation.

Remarks were made during a press conference held at the Government Palace, where he was joined by the actress and filmmaker.

As is known, the 43-year-old artist pays a visit to the South American country. Jolie's trip included visits to shelters in Lima's San Juan de Lurigancho district and northern Tumbes region.
