Peru President meets with Angelina Jolie

10:03 | Lima, Oct. 23.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday held a working meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Special Envoy Angelina Jolie.

The event was also attended by Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio.

Once the meeting came to an end, the Peruvian cabinet member and the UNHCR Special Envoy delivered remarks to the press.

As is known, US-born actress and director Jolie landed in the Inca country last Sunday to carry out an official visit representing the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

According to the UN agency, Peru is one of the countries most affected by the surge in Venezuelan refugees and migrants –the largest movement of people in Latin America's recent history.

Following up on the UN High Commissioner for Refugees' recent visit to the region, Jolie undertakes a three-day mission to assess the humanitarian needs of Venezuelan refugees and the challenges facing Peru as a host country, and to discuss the possible regional responses to the crisis.

During the trip, she has visited shelters in Lima's San Juan de Lurigancho district and northern Tumbes region.
