Peru to buy aircraft to battle drug trafficking

17:59 | Lima, Jun. 25.

Interior Minister Mauro Medina on Monday announced Peru will enhance its capacities to fight drug trafficking with the purchase of aircraft.

The idea is to launch surprise operations to reduce this crime, against which the country is making significant progress.

"The sector is making considerable efforts to acquire aircraft, including airplanes and helicopters, so that —in one and a half to two years— the anti-drug agency has adequate tools to combat effectively (this crime), taking the initiative, and enhancing the surprise factor," Medina stated.

During a ceremony marking the 27 anniversary of the National Anti-Drug Agency (Dirandro), Medina noted the work undertaken by this police unit, saying it is about to break the record for the amount of cocaine hydrochloride and illegal chemicals seized in the Andean country.

"This administration has seized more than 27 t of drugs and eradicated 14,000 ha of illicit coca leaf crops in the course of this year," the government official pointed out.

Precisely on Sunday —he continued— 193 kg of drugs and 3,000 kg of supplies were seized in the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro rivers (VRAEM).

Thus, he highlighted the agency's idea of prioritizing intelligence to succeed in operations.
