Abimael Guzman —the captured leader of the once-deadly Maoist-inspired terrorist organization Shining Path— currently faces two judicial proceedings and two new investigations on the crimes committed by Shining Path in Peru.

According to anti-terrorist Prosecutor Milko Ruiz, these proceedings and investigations are added to the two life sentences Guzman —and other Shining Path terrorist leaders— currently serve.

Soras and Perseo cases

In this sense, Ruiz explained Guzman, other Shining Path leaders, as well as pro-terrorist group Movement for Amnesty and Fundamental Rights (Movadef) members face a judicial proceeding for the Perseo Case

In the prosecutorial complaint, it is believed Movadef would be a façade for Shining Path. For that reason, the Prosecutor's Office has requested life sentences for Guzman, as well as for Elena Yparraguirre, Osman Morote, and Florindo Flores Hala.

The other complaint —against Guzman— is for the Soras Case

On July 16, 1984, 117 people from the Soras peasant community and seven adjoining areas were killed by Shining Path members.

Cases under investigation

The cases in investigation stage are the massacre in Huayao community (Ayacucho region) —in which 47 members of a civil defense patrol were killed— and the massacre of the Ashaninka community in Satipo (Junin region) —carried out systematically between 1989 and 1996.
