Peru team welcomed as heroes after Copa America final

Peru's national soccer team was given a heroes' welcome by excited fans who thronged Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport early on Monday to receive the Copa America runner-up.



This is why, today, hundreds of Peruvian fans waited for hours at the country's main airport to give them a well-deserved ovation.


Colorful clowns joined the crowd while a musical band played Peru's traditional songs.

Gareca's men arrived shortly before 6:00 AM (local time) in a four-hour delayed flight from Rio de Janeiro, where the Copa America final took place.


During the flight, the captain thanked the players for showing the entire country's courage.


"Thank you for leading the red-white team to a Copa America final after 44 years (…)," he stated.


Peru's all-time leading goalscorer Paolo Guerrero (Internacional) and his teammate Miguel Trauco (Flamengo) stayed in Brazil to join their clubs in the coming days.

According to the Peruvian Soccer Federation (FPF), the Inca side's defender Alexander Callens (New York City FC) decided to stay as well.
