The Peruvian Space Agency (CONIDA) promoted a working meeting with the entities responsible for disaster risk management, with the aim of strengthening the use of the Peruvian satellite system's capabilities in anticipation of the possible impacts of El Niño phenomenon.

The meeting took place at the National Satellite Imagery Operations Center (CNOIS) in Lima's Pucusana district.

At the site, CONIDA's institutional head, Air Force Major General Roberto Melgar, received representatives of the main entities involved in emergency prevention and response.

Participants included National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI) Chief, Army Brigadier General Luis Enrique Vasquez, and National Center for Disaster Risk Assessment, Prevention, and Reduction (CENEPRED) Chief Miguel Yamasaki.

Representatives of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) Disaster Risk Management Secretariat also attended.

Satellite imagery to support disaster risk management

The meeting helped strengthen coordination so that satellite images and geospatial information generated by CONIDA can be used as tools to anticipate risk scenarios associated with El Niño phenomenon.

These capabilities will make it possible to monitor the territory and promptly identify areas that could be affected by events associated with heavy rainfall, floods, or other emergencies.

The information generated by the Peruvian satellite system aims to provide authorities with additional tools to make decisions, plan preventive actions, and organize a more efficient response to emergency situations.

The CNOIS director, Air Force Colonel Ivan Cespedes, and the center's specialized personnel also participated in the meeting, as did Directorate of Space Applications and Geomatics (DIAPG) Chief, Jose Pasapera, accompanied by his technical team.

The head of the Planning and Budget Office, retired Air Force Colonel Edgardo Barrueto, was also present.

CONIDA's initiative strengthens cooperation among the institutions responsible for disaster risk management.

It also seeks to put space technology at the service of a more timely and coordinated government response to the possible effects of El Niño phenomenon.
