Peru: Salaverry, Olaechea to run for Congress Chairmanship

12:44 | Lima, Jul. 26.

Daniel Salaverry (Unidos por la Republica political party) and Pedro Olaechea (Accion Republicana political party) each lead one of the two multiparty lists that will compete in the election for Congress Chairmanship for the 2019-2020 term.

Olaechea is joined by Karina Beteta (Fuerza Popular), Salvador Heresi (Contigo), and Marvin Palma (Cambio 21).

On the other hand, Salaverry is accompanied by Cesar Vasquez (Alianza para el Progreso), Ana Maria Choquehuanca (Peruanos por el Kambio), and Wilbert Rozas (Frente Amplio).

Daniel Salaverry was not part of any political group until yesterday. As is known, he was elected Congress Chairman —for the 2018-2019 term— when he belonged to Fuerza Popular political party. Afterwards, they broke ties.

Congress' Chairmanship election should be led by the Parliament Chairman. However, as Salaverry currently runs for reelection, the process will be presided over by another lawmaker, in accordance with the regulations.

The winning list will be the one that obtains the simple majority.

If simple majority is not reached, then a second voting process will take place between the two lists.
