The Peruvian Interior Ministry (Mininter) on Friday reported that the remains of terrorist ringleader Abimael Guzman were incinerated in the early morning at the Naval Medical Center Hospital in Callao region.

In a communiqué, the ministry specified that the incineration of the terrorist's corpse began at 03:20 a.m. (local time) at the referred hospital and was completed at 05:30 a.m. of the present day.

As the law stipulates, the process took place in the presence of a Public Ministry representative and complying with all protocols established in the regulations.

It was also emphasized that Mininter carried out actions to support the Ministry of Justice-Human Rights for the dispersal of the incinerated remains in a time and place of a reserved nature, as indicated by law.

Likewise, it was reported that the Ministries of Interior and Justice-Human Rights were in charge of the incineration, in the presence of a Public Ministry representative.

Mininter reaffirmed its commitment to always act in full compliance with the law, as well as in favor of national security and internal order.

It also reminded citizens that on September 17 Law No. 31352 was published, which incorporates Article 112-A to Law No. 26842 (General Health Law).

The rule establishes the destination of corpses of inmates who had been serving sentences for crimes of treason or terrorism in their capacity as heads, ringleaders, or core members of a terrorist organization.

The law provides for the cremation after necropsy.

This is stipulated in the case of the corpse of an inmate who had been serving a sentence, and whose handing over, transfer, or burial may put national security or internal order at risk.
