Peru reaches agreements for tangerine exports to Viet Nam

12:00 | Lima, Nov. 21.

The Peruvian Government, through the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), announced that as a result of a technical meeting between phytosanitary authorities from Peru and Viet Nam, phytosanitary protocols for the export of fresh tangerines to this key Asian market were established.

"It is important that the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), as a strategic arm of the Agrarian Development and Irrigation Ministry (Midagri), continues to manage access to new markets so as to increase commercial opportunities for Peruvian producers and continue growing in terms of agro-exports," the Midagri representative stated.

During this meeting, the Senasa technical delegation also presented the progress made in efforts to gain access for blueberries to the Southeast Asian country. It is currently in the pest risk analysis stage.

In turn, the Vietnamese delegation stated that after completing the requirements for tangerines, the process for blueberries will continue, noting that "this process will be faster."

Phytosanitary protocols

Based on the agreements reached, the Viet Nam's phytosanitary authority will publish the agreed requirements in its official gazette.

In turn, Senasa will communicate the list of production areas and packing facilities authorized to start exporting tangerines to the Asian counterpart.

During the 2023 season, Peruvian citrus fruits were exported to over 40 countries, with the United States being the main market, accounting for 41% of the total exports.

The citrus fruits with the highest demand were tangerines, with over 190,000 metric tons exported. The United States was the primary market during the analyzed period.
