Peru President: "Your health and that of all Peruvians is in our hands"

09:29 | Lima, May. 7.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra emphasized that the health of the entire population —during this public health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic— is in the hands of Peruvians themselves.

"Peruvian men and women, today more than ever, your health and that of all Peruvians is in our hands," reads a tweet posted Wednesday by the Presidency of the Republic alongside a video featuring the message from the Head of State.

In the video, the top official stressed the importance of showing Peru's responsible and caring side.

"Stopping the spread of COVID-19 only depends on ourselves," Mr. Vizcarra said in his message addressed to the nation.

Invisible enemy

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) or the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). These viruses can be transmitted between animals and people.

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new strain that had not been previously identified in humans. It is transmitted from human to human through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing. COVID-19 is also transmitted by close contact with people infected by the virus.
