Peru President: "We've got the strength to make major changes in the country"

16:52 | Lima, Jul. 29.

President Martin Vizcarra on Sunday said Peruvians' support provides the necessary strength to make major changes in the country.

His remarks were made while receiving citizens' spontaneous support as he walked along the city's streets after the Civic-Military Parade held on the occasion of Peru's 197th Independence anniversary.

At the end of the traditional event, Peru's top official made his way down Brasil Ave. approaching the population —at certain stretches— to say hello and shake hands with men and women who, early in the morning, reached the area to watch the parade.

Peruvians showed support for the President, who expressed satisfaction with the gesture.

"This strength (people's support) makes us strong to implement the great changes that Peru needs," the Head of State stressed in brief statements to the press before continuing his journey.

As is known, on Saturday Vizcarra proposed holding a referendum to determine whether Peruvians want Congress members to be re-elected.

It must be noted lawmakers' disapproval ratings are high among Peruvians, according to surveys.

Besides the re-election issue, the referendum will decide on a reform of the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM).

It will also address political parties' financing and the return to the bicameral parliamentary system.
