The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Thursday met with Chilean President-elect Gabriel Boric, with whom he discussed issues of interest on the bilateral agenda, as well as cooperation spaces for joint work on regional and global issues.

The Peruvian Head of State and his delegation, made up of the Foreign Affairs Minister Cesar Landa and Ambassador to Chile Jaime Pomareda, were received by Boric at the Municipality of Santiago.

Following a warm greeting and the delivery of a present by President Castillo, the private meeting between the two dignitaries began.

At the event, they were expected to discuss the Presidential Meeting and the Binational Cabinet of Ministers, suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is up to Chile to organize the 4th Binational Cabinet.

They were also expected to talk about issues related to the strengthening and expansion of the Pacific Alliance, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the Inter-American Dialogue at the Organization of American States (OAS), as well as the reopening of borders, among others.

It must be noted that Peru-Chile relations are at the highest level. Similarly, Chile is Peru's second-largest trading partner in Latin America. In fact, bilateral trade amounted to US$3.005 billion in 2021. Besides, it is the major source of foreign tourists to Peru.

Approximately 225,000 Peruvians reside permanently in Chile, while some 10,000 Chileans live in Peru.
